Birstall win the L&RGU Scratch League following tense finale to the season
The Scratch League championship title, promotion and relegation issues were almost all settled in the final round of the L&RGU Scratch League matches on Thursday 16th August.
In division one, Birstall hosted Cosby knowing a win for them would secure the league title; a draw or a defeat would see Cosby crowned as league champions. In an incredibly tight game with 4 matches going the distance Birstall managed to secure a 4.5-3.5 win when Jack Mayfield beat James Billingham in the final tie. Congratulations to Birstall.
Relegation from division 1 is still to be settled following a 4-4 draw between Longcliffe and Hinckley – both teams tied on points won and games won throughout the season so there will be a playoff between the two clubs at a neutral venue on Thursday 23rd August. Good luck to both teams.
In division two a 6-2 away win for The Leicestershire at Whetstone saw them claim the title and promotion. Whetstone’s defeat, alongside a Rothley Park win against Glen Gorse, sees Whetstone relegated to division 3.
In the third division Beedles Lake are promoted as league winners despite losing their final game 7-1 at Charnwood Forest. The win wasn’t enough to save Charnwood from relegation as Kirby Muxloe won away at Kibworth. The defeat for Kibworth doesn’t stop them from joining Beedles Lake in division 2 next year as two teams are promoted to rebalance the leagues following Park Hill’s closure.
Division four sees Willesley Park and Lingdale promoted, Willesley Park as league winners whilst Stapleford Park are relegated to division 5.
In the fifth division, Market Harborough had already won the league and promotion before the final round of matches. Melton Mowbray may also be promoted, depending on the number of entries to the scratch league for 2019.
Congratulations to Birstall on becoming the champions; The Leicestershire, Beedles Lake, Willesley Park and Market Harborough on becoming division winners. Prizes will be awarded at the County Dinner in February 2019. Congratulations too on gaining promotion to Kibworth and Lingdale.
