L&RGU Seniors recording convincing win v Lincolnshire

The L&RGU team approached their rearranged East Midlands league match with Lincolnshire knowing that only an away win by a substantial margin would keep their hopes of a first league title alive.

Ten of the team had managed to get to Spalding for practice rounds ahead of the fixture and the knowledge gained was put to good use on this tight and tricky course that was in excellent condition. The morning foursomes matches were all close with Leics having the edge in taking a 4-2 lunchtime lead.

In the afternoon the extra preparation really showed its value and at one point it looked like a clean sweep for the L&RGU team was possible as they led in all matches. Our top pairing of Graham Marshall and Phil Gray showed the way by securing a comprehensive 7&6 victory as the Leicestershire team produced a barrage of birdies which their opponents were unable to match. Eventually we had to settle for an afternoon 10-2 score line giving an overall result which keeps the title hopes alive.
