L&RGU Seniors lose to Nottinghamshire in the Midlands League

Match report from Seniors' Captain, Alan Turton:

Wollaton Park was in excellent condition for the East Midlands League match against the current Midland Seniors Champions. In the morning foursomes local knowledge gave Notts the edge, a fine win for Alan Martinez and Mark Illsley and a battling half from Gilbert Scoular and Martin Downing were the morning highlights but left an uphill task in the afternoon.

After the first 9 holes in the afternoon the match was very much in the balance with each team marginally ahead in a couple of matches. Alan Turton and Paul Watson won all the par 5’s in securing their 4 & 3 victory whilst Alan Martinez and Mark Illsley again overcame their opponents. How close the remaining matches were is typified by what happened in the second pairs match, upon reaching the 17th one down both Leicestershire & Rutland players found the green on this uphill par 3 with both Nottinghamshire players missing the green. A holed chip then left the L&RGU needing to make birdie to keep the match alive Gilbert Scoular duly obliged from 25 feet. In the end we lost three matches in the afternoon by the smallest margin of 1 down giving Nottinghamshire a victory by a margin that did not reflect how tight the match actually was.
