CONGRATULATIONS TO KILWORTH SPRINGS GOLF CLUB, EGU CHAMPION CLUB OF ENGLAND AND SECOND IN EUROPE. Following their success in the English Team Championships held earlier this year, the 3 Kilworth players represented the EGU in the European Club Championship, played at the beginning of November, in Corfu. Congratulations to Gary Wolstenholme, Dion Stephens and Sam Mayfield, on their remarkable success when the finished in second position. CONGRATULATIONS ALSO TO JASON PALMER, KIRBY MUXLOE GOLF CLUB, JASON IS THE NEW ITALIAN OPEN CHAMPION. Pictured left, Gary Wolstenholme, Kilworth Springs GC, receives the County Club Champion of Champions Trophy from Immediate Past President, John Ward, Rothley Park The annual event is held at the end of each playing season, all clubs are invited to send their Club Champion to compete in this event, held this year at Willesley Park Golf Club, on Saturday 30th September. Gary, competing in the event for the first time, mastered the tricky autumn course conditions very well, shooting a total of 137 for his two rounds to win by a 5 shot margin from David Gibson, Cosby, 142 total, who has had a really wonderful year. 15 year old Tom James, Scraptoft GC's. Champion, took third place, a shot back on 143. Gary's first round of 3 under par 67, gave him a lead at half way of 4 shots from David, who had 2 same round scores of 71s. Gary returned 70 in his second round, to increase the overall margin to 5 over David, with Tom closing the gap in the afternoon after his fine round of 70, following his morning round 73. The County Union held a joint finals day for the Men's' and Mixed Inter Club Foursomes on Sunday 17th September, at Rutland County Golf Club. The day proved to be a great success, combining the 2 events into 1 day for the first time. Pictured left are the Men's' winning team from Birstall Golf Club, Club Captain Brian Payne proudly receives the trophy from County President Mike Potter, also a Birstall member. Stuart Marriott, Richard Reed, Chris Webb and Scott Wormleighton combined to beat Hinckley 2 up over 36 holes of combined foursomes, moving on to finish 2 up after their lunch time score of 1 up. The Hinckley team was Steve and Mark Whittle, Richard Haines and Wes Britton. Pictured right is the winning Mixed team from The Leicestershire Golf Club, 10 up winners over Scraptoft Golf Club. Ladies Captain Margaret Parker (nee Daniels) and Club Captain Peter Harrisson received the trophy from Mike Potter, the pairings for the Leicestershire were David Allcock and Lou Bruning, together with Christian Dean and Fay Brook. Lunchtime saw the Leicestershire to a 3 up lead, which was later enhanced to 10 up. Pictured are Alex Cooper and Craig Hallam, Melton Mowbray Golf Club, winners of the John Cheatle Invitation Foursomes, receiving their trophies from County President Mike Potter. The Annual event was again held at its tradition home of Rothley Park, on Sunday 3rd September. Alex and Craig combined to return their score of 75 - 3.5 = 71.5 to win the trophies. In the gross section, County First Team Past Captains David Gibson and Gilbert Scoular, Cosby Golf Club, proved too strong for the rest of the field, their gross score of 73 was 2 better than their nearest rivals.
Prize Winners in the Annual Sports Mercury Cup Tournament are pictured late in the day, after the event held this year at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club, on Thursday 24th August . The Sports Mercury Cup, awarded to the player with the lowest Nett score on the day, went to Gordon Simms, Lingdale Golf Club, for his very fine round of 79 - 14 = 65, only 8 over Par Gross and 5 under the Tournament CSS. David Gibson, Cosby, the holder, was again the winner of the Sports Mercury Scratch Trophy after his fabulous round of 68. David has now won the Scratch prize on 5 occasions, this highlights the superb form he has been in during 2006. Also pictured are Second best nett winner Andy Rudkin, Lingdale, Second best gross Mark Manship, also Cosby, Best nett prize winner 0-9 handicap Ed Eley, Oadby and Best nett prize winner 10-18 handicap Steve Harlow, also from Lingdale Golf Club.
Jonathon Herbert, Professional, Choice Management and attached to Hinckley Golf Club, a member of the Euro Tour, was this years Winner of the County Open Championship, sponsored by Mark Insulations Ltd. The event held at Glen Gorse Golf Club on Sunday 20th August proved to be a nail biting event. Herbert finished 1 ahead of ex European tour player Matt Cort, Jelson Holmes, after his 36 hole score of 140. Herbert had trailed by 3 in the morning round, but stormed back in the afternoon to take the title by the narrowest of margins. His scores of 72 and 68, proved to be just enough to beat Cort, who shot 69 and 72. Clive Fromant, Enderby Golf Centre, was 3rd and completed a clean sweep for the Professionals. Martin Anderson, Kibworth, was the leading Amateur, after a 3 way tie on 145, with Steve Sansome, Cosby, and Kieran Thomas, Hinckley. The 3 players went to sudden death, with Kieran eliminated at the first extra hole, Martin, playing the long par 5, 12th hole, the second extra hole, hit a magnificent shot to 7 feet before sinking his putt for an eagle 3 to win the Amateur prize, Steve making birdie 4.
David Gibson, Cosby, pictured receiving The Leicestershire Fox from Immediate Past County President John Ward, Rothley Park, after his magnificent win in the annual event held at Willesley Park, on Sunday 13th August. It was David's 4th win in this event, which becomes a new county record. The event, a Midland Order of Merit event, was played in rainy blustery weather throughout the day, with a slight improvement for the later starters but again deteriorating towards the end. The CSS jumped 2 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. The first round saw David's score of 68 take a 2 shot lead over Gary Wolstenholme, Kilworth Springs, with several players bunched behind on 71, including past winner Paul Dixon, Willesley Park, closely followed by Neil Chaudhuri, The Leicestershire, on 72 and the holder, Jason Palmer, Kirby Muxloe, on 73. David, playing off a handicap of +3, had 5 birdies and 3 bogies in his morning round, followed by 4 birdies and 2 bogies in the afternoon, the birdie he made at the 16th being particularly crucial, with Wolstenholme close behind and Chaudhuri making a charge with a series of birdies in the afternoon, for David to win the event by a clear 3 shots. The best score of the day 67, came from Steve Courtney, The Chase G.C. in his afternoon round, Steve now leads the MOM by 2.5pts. Martin Anderson, double winner of the 2006 County Boys Championship and Matchplay events, pictured left receiving the Strokeplay trophy from County President Michael Potter and right with his Matchplay trophy. The events this year were held at Kibworth Golf Club, the strokeplay on Wednesday 9th August, followed by the matchplay on Thursday and Friday, each day played in blustery conditions. The Stroke play event proved to be an exciting event with Martin winning by 2 shots from his close friend and county rival, George Harper, Lee Wilson took third place. The morning proved to be the more testing of the 2 rounds with the competition standard scratch going up by 2, afternoon conditions and players knowledge of the course helped maintain the competition standard scratch at the normal SSS. Martin started with a 74 and with his afternoon score of 75, this gave him a winning total of 149, around his home course. The top 16 boys played off for the matchplay event over the next 2 days, Martin drawn top, beat Michael Livie 2/1, then Josh Holmes 4/3 on the first day before meeting Shaun Corby in the semi final, which he won 2/1. In the final he overcame Oliver Bennett, by 4/3, Oliver putting up a great performance as a 14 year old against the more seasoned county junior. Beedles Lake Golf Club was the host for the County Boys Age Group Championship on Wednesday 2nd August when a field of 92 competed for the Rae Spillane Trophy, an 18 hole nett event for age ranges from U12 to U18 on the 1st January. In very windy and dull conditions the golf proved to of the very best quality, many of the boys shooting low scores to help reduce their handicaps. The winner, Stan Wallis, Melton Mowbray, provided the magnificent nett score of 78 - 15 = 63 to take the title, he is pictured right with County President Michael Potter and new County Junior Organiser David Hylins, Breedon Priory. Stan stated he was very confident going into the round, he intended to try to par the first 2 holes to get off to a steady start, but found himself putting for birdies on both, only to end up making bogies on each. He recovered his composure to turn in 42, but then the recovery really took off, returning in level par 36 to complete his score of 78, the back nine included 1 birdie, 1 bogie and the rest pars. Melton Mowbray players filled the top order, George Harper shot a magnificent gross 69 to create a New Course Record, an absolutely marvelous achievement on such a blustery day, his outwards nine of 35, included 2 birdies and 1 bogie, inwards his 34 included 2 birdies, all the rest were pars! for full result please click here
The County Seniors Championship was held at The Luffenham Heath Golf Club on Wednesday 26th July. The event, run in conjunction with the Seniors Team Championship, was won by Past President of the Union, Eddie Hammond, Kirby Muxloe, with a magnificent 70. Eddie's win is his 4th in the event since it began and came just a few days before his 72nd birthday, an incredible feat! He went out in level par 35, returned in the same score of 35 having made a total of 3 bogies and 3 birdies during his round. Eddie is pictured left receiving the Trophy from County President Michael Potter, Birstall. John Lovett, Kilworth Springs, was the runner up with a fine 73 and in 3rd place Richard Murmann from the host club with his score of 78. Richard's score helped the home team to win the Team Trophy, pictured right are the Luffenham Heath team, John Parker gross 78, Graham Turner, gross 80 and Richard, seen with the County President, for their combined score of 236. The Luffenham course has undergone major changes during the last year, all bunkers have been renewed, several new tees have been built to give a new blue course, including 2 new greens, all of which are due to come into operation at the end of the month. 4 SSSs will then be available for Blue, White, Yellow and Green courses. for full result please click here. Steve Sansome, Cosby Golf Club, Winner of 2006 County Matchplay Title, is pictured left holding the Philip R. Wykes Trophy. Steve met Richard Wells, Beedles Lake, in the final, Richard narrowly missing out on the double after his fine win in the Stroke Play event played at Rothley Park last week. Steve becomes tied on 5 wins now with former Champions Guy Wolstenholme and Roger Christian. The event began in 1932. The event this year was held at Hinckley Golf Club, pictured left to right are County President Michael Potter, runner up Richard Wells, Steve Sansome and Hinckley Club Captain Alan Millhouse, who refereed the final. On his way to the final, Steve beat in earlier rounds Chris Webb, Birstall 5/4, Richard Reed also Birstall 3/2, in the semi final he overcame Adam Kemp, Longcliffe 2/1 and finally Richard Wells by 3/2. Richard overcame Patrick Stevens, Cosby 3/2, Jason Palmer, Kirby Muxloe at 21st, and Liam Plant, Cosby 2/1.Steve was delighted to have won for the fifth time and hopes next year to make it a lifetime best of 6. He played steady golf making 2 birdies on the outward nine, only to be pulled back to all square at half way, he again took the lead at 11 making par, a birdie at 12 increased the lead to 2, a bogie at 14 cut the lead until the 15th where a par was good enough, until finally another birdie at 16 sealed his fine win 3/2. for full results please click here
Pictured right, Richard Wells, Beedles Lake, Winner of 2006 County Amateur Championship, receives the trophy from President Michael Potter following his fine win in the event held at Rothley Park Golf Club. Richard finished on 138, 3 clear of the field, after 3 players tied for second place. His morning round of 4 under par 67 included 7 birdies and 2 bogies, his afternoon round 71, for level par, 2 birdies and 2 bogies. Speaking afterwards Richard stated that in his wildest dreams he had not expected to beat such an illustrious field and this is something he will treasure for the rest of his life. Richard goes on to represent the County at the Annual EGU English County Champions Tournament, held at Woodhall Spa on 23rd September. Several players considerably improved their scores in the afternoon round, David Gibson producing the second 67 of the day. Jake Amos, produced a second round 68, as did Jason Palmer and County junior team member Tom James. Tom's handicap has dropped from 5 to 2 in just the last few months, Tom has only just turned 15yrs. Another County Junior, Michael Reed, one day before his 16th birthday, produced a fine first round score of 71, his second round was 76, for a total 147. County Junior Captain, Scott Wormleighton, also had a very satisfactory day, his scores being 72, 73. The day was particularly hot with temperatures soaring, adding to the players difficulties, the CSS for both rounds going up 1 shot to 72.

David Gibson, Cosby Golf Club, ever dependant County First Team player was the star of the County team when they competed at Northamptonshire County Golf Club in the Midland Golf Union Regional 6 man Qualifying round of the EGU County Championship. The team finished in second place, 6 behind the winners Warwickshire, who are celebrating their Centenary. David, playing fantastic golf was the individual winner, his first round 5 under par 65, against a CSS of 72 equaled the Amateur Course Record. He followed this up with a 68, again CSS 72, playing off plus 2 his handicap will be reduced to plus 3. David's total was 133, fellow team members, Steve Sansome, also Cosby shot 70, 74, 144, Liam Plant, Cosby, 79, 74, 153, Dion Stevens, Kilworth Springs, 72, 77, 149, Jake Amos, also Kilworth, 77, 67, 144, and Jason Palmer, Kirby Muxloe, returning directly from his success in the British, shot 66, 73, 139. Jason, playing without practice, arrived tired but very happy to join his team mates late after his quarter final spot on Friday morning at Royal St. Georges. Total scores for the Counties were, Warwickshire 856, L & RGU 862, Lincolnshire 865, Staffordshire 871, Nottinghamshire 877, Worcestershire 883, Northamptonshire, 886, Shropshire and Herefordshire 889, Cambridgeshire 906, Derbyshire 908.
Derek Gray, Secretary Manager of Hinckley Golf Club receives the Gardiner Cup from County President Michael Potter after his win in the Annual event held for Club Secretaries and Handicap Chairman. The event was held at Derek's home course Hinckley on a splendid evening. His winning score in the medal competition was 80 - 10 = 70, winning by 2 shots from 4 players tied on 72. Derek is a previous winner having taken the title in 2003, the event being one of the Counties oldest tournaments originating in 1939.
David Gibson and Adele Jenno, Cosby Golf Club members, were this years winners of the F.A. Jackson Trophies, they are pictured with County President Michael Potter outside the Stapleford Park Golf Clubhouse. The Annual event was moved to Stapleford this year to accommodate Lingdale Golf Club, our normal hosts, who are in the process of building their new clubhouse. David and Adele, also past winners of this event, played beautifully in the very tough and testing conditions, the course played extremely long in the cold wind, which followed a bought of severe wet weather. Their Winning Score 75 - 1.4 = 73.6 They played steady regulation golf, David taking many of Adele's drives in this Greensome Medal, played off Handicap. Pictured Jake Amos, Kilworth Springs, winner of the County Spring Tournament, played annually for the Robin Fraser Trophy. This event is the traditional season opener and always proves to be a tough test of golf. This year the 2 courses used, The Leicestershire, and Longcliffe GC. celebrating their Centenary, tested the players to the full, Longcliffe on the second day, proving to be a real test in the early spring conditions. Jake, an England Boy International, having represented his Country at U16 level v Italy, opened his county tally with this, his first County Championship win, fighting off strong competition from Liam Plant, Cosby, Steve Sansome, now also Cosby, Arshad Tarmahomed, Scraptoft, and Jason Palmer Kirby Muxloe. Jake held a 1 shot lead after day 1, his first round 70, followed by a 66 around the par 68, SSS 71 Leicestershire, was a shot ahead of Liam who opened with a 72, followed by a best score of the tournament 65. Arshad was 2 shots back in 3rd with Steve and Jason a further shot behind going into the 2nd day at Longcliffe. Day 2 saw Jake open with a 2 under par 70, equaled by Steve, Liam 1 shot back on 71, all fine scores around the Par 72 SSS 73 tough Longcliffe course. The 4th round proved decisive with Amos beginning to sink puts and the others falling back. Jake closed with his 3 under par round 69, for a total 275, to record his first home county win by 6 clear shots. Steve battled on to record a second spot with his level par 72, total 281, Liam finishing 3rd, his afternoon score of 75 giving him a total of 283. Jake, although only 19 years of age, has been involved with the County since his first appearance for the Juniors at the age of 12. He has represented England at U16, U17 and U18 age groups. | Following the recent AGM, David Hylins, Breedon Priory, has taken over the Role of Junior Delegate to the EGU. David joined our Junior Organisers' Team last year and succeeds Keith Tripp, who has retired after very many years of committee work, the last 5 years serving as our delegate. Keith was unanimously approved a new Vice President of the Union. Mike Potter, President, has taken over the role of voting member at the EGU, following the retirement of Past President Gordon Upward. Gordon has served the County Union for so many years in his previous roles as President, Hon. Secretary and Delegate to both Midland Golf Union, serving as their Chairman, and the English Golf Union, where he was a member of the Presidents Advisory Committee prior to the EGU's Incorporation. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
