On a  glorious late Autumn evening, Nick Oakley, Professional and Kieran Thomas, Amateur, Hinckley Golf Club winners of the 2005 Interclub Pro-Am foursomes, are pictured at Lutterworth Golf Club with Club Captain Nelson Walke and Club President John Swift.

Nick, right and Kieran second left were comfortable winners over Mike Herbert, Pro and Andy Rastrick Am, Kibworth Golf Club, winning by a margin of 4/2.

The morning saw them take a 5 hole lead, things tightened slightly in the afternoon before they ran out winners at the 16th.

County President Mike Potter presents the Club Champion of Champions Millennium Trophy to Steve Critchley, Longcliffe, after his fine win in the 36 hole medal event played this year at his home course, on Saturday 1st October.  Steve finished on 145, 3 shots clear of runner up, Junior County Captain Sam Mayfield on 148, and  in third place was Richard Meek, The Leicestershire, on 150.

20 of the 32 clubs had entered their club champion for this event, the day proved to be quite tricky with a strong north westerly blowing, shooting up the morning CSS to 75, 2 more than the SSS,  Steve's fine gross 71, playing off plus 2, secured a further reduction in the 37 year olds handicap. In the afternoon the wind eased and so slightly did Steve's play, his 74, including a marvellous 2 at the 8th, an uphill Par4, stroke 1, was against the resulting CSS of 74.

Whetstone Golf Club were the winners of the County Mixed Foursomes, after they defeated Rothley Park Golf Club in the finals, played at Beedles Lake Golf Club on Sunday 18th September.

This was a first County Championship win for Whetstone, playing against the first ever winners of the title, an event dating back to 1937.

Pictured Lady Captain Alice Seabrook with  players Gary Newton and his Partner Jan Hibberd , Sue Barker and Gary Corby. The margin was an aggregate of 9 up, Jan and Gary beating David Wardle and Caroline Gay by 4 Up, Sue and Shaun overcoming Fran Lilley and Jon Benford 5 up. The morning round resulted in Whetstone being 9 up and the afternoon rounds finished all square, to give the first time Champions a splendid win.                                              click here for results of all rounds


Cosby Golf Club retained the County Men's' Foursomes title for 2005 after their fine win over Longcliffe Golf Club. The Finals were played at Market Harborough Golf Club on Sunday 11th September.

Pictured with the trophy are Cosby Captain Alan Wilson and players Gilbert Scoular , Mark Manship, Adam Dalby and Liam Plant.

Adam and Gilbert playing together finished 5 Up, after 36 holes, over Paul Watson and Gary McAllister, whilst Liam and Mark were 6 up winners over Steve Critchley and Kevin Dandy, Cosby having turned the match in fine style following the morning round, in which the Longcliffe team had lead  on aggregate by 1 hole.

County 1st Team are once again Anglian League Champions following their 8.5/3.5 win over Cambridgeshire away at Gog Magog. County finished with 9 points out of 10. Unfortunately the 2nd team crashed at home at Birstall to Cambridgeshire 2nds by 5/7, each County finishing with 7 points. The 2nd team league champion has yet to be announced following a match in which Suffolk were unable to raise a team.

Melton Mowbray GC are the L & R GU Junior Champion Club, following the County Junior League finals, held at Melton Mowbray, and will now go on to represent the County in the EGU Junior Champion Club Finals, to be held at Woodhall Spa in October.


Clive Patrick, Lingdale and David Gibson, Cosby, best nett and best gross winners of the Mercury Cup, held at Hinckley GC on Thursday 25th August.

The day proved to be a real challenge for all of the players, thunder and lightning, followed by a severe hailstorm which flooded the greens and interrupted play causing a delay of more than 1 1/2 hours, the final group arriving back in the clubhouse just as night fell.

Clive and David will now go forward to Marriott Forest of Arden, as part of the Leicester Mercury team, together with Bill Anderson and Tim Beard of the Mercury, to compete in the Regional Finals of The Times Corporate Golf Challenge in October, and if successful there, they would go to La Manga, Spain, in November for the Grand Finals.

The County annual John Cheatle Invitation Foursomes competition took place on Sunday 21st August, at its traditional home Rothley Park Golf Club. The tournament was first set up by Past President John Cheatle, the players are all traditionally invited by the current County President, Mike Potter, to attend. Mike is pictured here presenting the trophies to this years winners, Dave Sewart and Ed Eley, from Oadby Golf Club. They won the Championship, awarded for the best nett of the day, their gross score was also equal lowest of the day.

In gathering darkness, Jason Palmer, Kirby Muxloe,  receives the "County Open Championship" Salver from President Mike Potter. This event, played at Birstall Golf Club on Sunday 14th August, is sponsored annually by Mark Insulations, to whom the County are most grateful for their continued and generous support.

Pictured also is Keith Tripp, President of the Leicestershire and Rutland Captains' Society, they also sponsor the amateurs and also present a silver salver, awarded to the leading amateur. This year Jason took both titles after finishing tied first with Professionals Iain Lyner and Matthew Cort, Jelson Homes, on a score of 136, 4 under par, his rounds were 70, 66.

A dramatic 3 way play off took place, Matt was eliminated at the first extra hole after driving into a bunker, the second and third holes were halved in par, before Jason, at the 4th extra hole, drove to 3 feet at the Par 3, 10th, and then slotted the putt for a birdie 2 to give him his second County title in succession.

Jason has been in a rich vein of form recently, after shooting a 59 in a friendly fourball at his club, he eagerly awaits a return to his University studies.

Pictured left Iain Lyner, The Leicestershire,  the Leading Professional in The County Open Championship sponsored by Mark Insulations, Iain tied first in the stroke play event with Jason Palmer and Matthew Cort, Jelson Homes, pictured right, Matt is a current Asian Tour Professional and until recently he played on the European Tour. Matt and Iain were both successful Amateurs and played for the County Union teams before turning professional.


Jeff Collington, Cosby, was the County Junior Match Play winner, held following the Stroke Play event at Kirby Muxloe. This was sweet justice for Jeff who had so narrowly missed out in the Stroke Pay but this event was not without its own drama. In the last 8 he had defeated very promising George Harper, quarter finals Michael Livie, in the semi finals his close friend and County Boys Captain, Sam Mayfield, before coming up against stern opposition in the final from Richard Reed, Birstall. The match proved a thriller from start to finish, Richard leading at the turn by 1, Jeff taking the 12,13 and 14th before Richard levelled at 15 and 17 to take the match into extra holes. This time Jeff reversed his stroke play score at the first and won with a birdie 3 to become the champion in his final year. He is pictured receiving the Trophy from Mike Potter, accompanied by Keith Tripp.

The County Seniors team went forward to the "Midland Golf Union Seniors Team Championship" at Burghley Park on Thursday 11th August hoping for a better result than in previous years. Unfortunately this was not to be, the team could only finish in 9th position, out of 10 Counties. Northamptonshire were the winners with a team score of 379 (5 from 6) and now go forward to represent the Midlands in the inaugural EGU Seniors County Championship to be played later in the year at Minchinhampton Golf Club against 3 other Regional Champions.

The Format will be a Round Robin against each of the other Counties, a 7 man team will play 2 foursomes in the morning and 4 singles in the afternoon, an onerous task from which our County had opted out.

Players Scores were, Irving Pugh 81, Charles Parker 83, Nick Walley 78, Keith Elliott 85, Robin Laurie 79 total 406, Clive Patrick, 86 D/Q, was the non counting score.


Scott Wormleighton, Birstall, receives the Junior Championship Trophy from County President Mike Potter, accompanied by County Delegate to the EGU Keith Tripp, after his triumph in the Junior Championships held at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club on Wednesday 10th August. Scott, who only recently joined Birstall from Beedles Lake, is anxiously awaiting his A Level results.

A dramatic finish to the second round secured a play off place for Scott, his birdie 2 against a double bogie 5 by Jeff Collington took them to a sudden death play off, a birdie 3 for Scott at the1st extra hole give him the title with rounds of 73 + 70 total of 143.

Once again Willesley Park Golf Club hosted the "Leicestershire Fox", this annual event, which qualifies for the Midland Order of Merit, this year proved to be a fine venue and 36 holes were completed in super weather conditions.

Jason Palmer, Kirby Muxloe, with 2  fine rounds of 69, was a clear winner by 4 shots from Paul Dixon, a previous winner from the host club. This was Jason's first major County success, he is pictured receiving the superb trophy, donated by Alfred Chapman, from County President Mike Potter and host club Captain Ivan Finch.

The Boys Age Group Championship took place at Forest Hill Golf Club on Wednesday 3rd August.

Pictured left to right are County President Mike Potter who presented The Rae Spillane Trophy to Kieran Foster, Melton Mowbray, also pictured is Keith Tripp, L & R GU County Junior Delegate to the EGU.

Kieran's fine round of 81 - 18 = 63  ensured he was a clear winner by 2 shots, he has only been playing golf for 3 years.

Stapleford Park Golf Club, one of the County's newest affiliated clubs, hosted the 4th round match of the Anglian League, this being the first time a League match had been staged there. The County 2nd team played Lincolnshire on this fine course, set in the grounds of Stapleford Country Club, in the pure setting of a Capability Brown landscape. The course was designed by Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie and now has a day ticket, competitively priced against other courses of this stature.

The match proved to a thriller, Lincolnshire leading 3 - 1 after the morning foursomes, only for the County to fight back to level the match scores at 6 - 6, winning the afternoon singles 5 - 3, Arshad Tarmahomed, Sam Mayfield, Richard Meek, Adam Kemp and Alex Cooper, making his debut, were the successful players in the afternoon. Both 1st and 2nd teams currently lead their respective leagues.

The winning team of the Seniors Team Trophy, incorporated within the Seniors Championship, pictured left to right, are players from Glen Gorse Golf Club, Dewi Paylor, Robert Taylor and Neil Pearson, the team combined a score of 227 to win the shield.

County President, Mike Potter, presents the Seniors' Championship Trophy to Clive Patrick, Lingdale, after the event held at The Leicestershire Golf Club on Wednesday 27th July.

Clive emerged the winner, for the 2nd time in the history of the event, after his dramatic extra hole win over Neil Pearson, Glen Gorse, they had tied on 74. The weather had threatened all day, both finishing their rounds in torrential rain.

Adam Dalby, Cosby, receives the Philip R Wykes Bowl from County President Mike Potter, after his fine win in the County Match Play Championships, held this year at Glen Gorse Golf Club, on Saturday and Sunday 2/3rd July.

18 year old Adam, who will shortly  commence an Accountancy course at   Leicester University, won his first County Senior Title when he beat Richard Brown, Kibworth, 6/5 in the final. Adam last year won the Junior Match Play title at the same course.

In the 1st round he defeated Scott De Rosa, Kirby Muxloe 3/2. 2nd Round he took the major scalp of Paul Dixon, Willesley Park, again winning 3/2. In the semi final he defeated Nick Jelley, Kirby Muxloe by the same score.

His afternoon finals opponent, Richard, was under severe pressure right from the 1st hole. Adam then produced 2 wonderful shots at the 5th forcing Richard to  concede Adam's Eagle 3. Wins at the 6th, 7th, 9th 10th and 11th cemented his lead before a birdie, and conceded half, at the 13th, gave Adam his fine win. His score, for the 13 holes played, probably meant he had finished 4 under par.

In the first round, title holder Steve Sansome, Birstall, lost in a thrilling match on the final hole, to another promising young player Alex Cooper from Melton Mowbray GC.

The County team travelled to Worfield Golf Club in Shropshire, on Saturday 18th June,  to compete in the Midland Region EGU County Finals Qualifier.

In very hot and dry conditions, the course proved to be quite tough and the team were unable to match the previous 2 years' results, unfortunately missing out on the Finals trip to St Enedoc in September.

The team was also unfortunately without 3 of their other players, who were away competing in Wales.

S. Sansome, Birstall, this years winner of the Amateur Championship receives the trophy from County President Mike Potter, assisted by host club Captain John Page of the Luffenham Heath Golf Club.

Steve battled through, in testing conditions to win by 5 clear shots from Richard Wells, Beedles Lake.

Steve will now go on to represent the County Union at the English Golf Union Champions Final, to be held at Woodhall Spa, on 17th September.

The 3 players combined in the Amateur Championship at Luffenham to total their scores of  444.

Birstall GC. now go forward to represent the County Union in the EGU Champion Club Finals, to be held on August 26/27th, at Brancepath Castle.
