English County Championships Final - Worksop 24th - 26th Sept 04

Day One saw L&RGU begin their match against Surrey with a superb victory after the mornings foursomes - the County leading 2.5 - 0.5.  Wins in the foursomes coming from Gary Wolstenholme and Neil Chaudhuri in the top match and Steve Sansome and David Gibson in the bottom match – both pairs winning 4 and 3, and a half from Jason Palmer and Philip Thomason who were 2 down with 3 to play and fought back for a splendid half.

The afternoon singles matches were shared 3 - 3 with wins from Wolstenholme, Sansome and Gibson to ensure a 5.5 – 3.5 victory.

In the other match of Day One, Devon secured a narrow victory over Durham running out 5 - 4 wins.

Day Two saw the County meet Devon, the current holders who narrowly beat us in the last match last year at Formby. 

This morning L&RGU raced into a formidable lead in match 1 with Sansome and Gibson in brilliant form and quickly secured their victory with an 8 and 7 win.  In the bottom match Wolstenholme and Chaudhuri were 3 and 2 winners and Palmer and Thomason repeated their Day One form with Thomason holing a superb 6 foot putt on the last to secure a half once again having been 2 down with 3 to play. This morning ended with L&RGU leading 2.5 to a half.

This afternoons singles saw Devon fight back, resulting in a 3.5 - 2.5 win in the afternoon. However, fine wins by Gibson and Chaudhuri and a half by Sansome secured our 2.5 points to give an overall victory by 5 and 4.

Day Three sees the County in a strong position taking on Durham. The points position so far:

Day Three  saw the L&RGU get away to a slow start in this mornings foursomes against Durham. The top match lost 4 and 3, the middle lost 2 and 1 and the only point came from the duo of Sansome and Gibson, winning 5 and 4.The county turn for lunch 1 - 2 down and face a tough afternoon ahead.

In the other mornings match, Surrey lead Devon 2 - 1.
