2004 - Archive News: The County Club Champion of Champions Tournament, for the Millennium Trophy donated by E.W. Hammond, took place at Hinckley Golf Club on Saturday 2nd October when 20 of our Clubs sent their champion along to compete in the event. On a cold and windy day, play
was tricky and only 2 par rounds were recorded all day.
The morning round proved decisive for home club champion Kieran Thomas, his 71 was 3 clear of Liam Plant, Cosby and Paul Frith, Birstall, both on 74, the greens proving difficult to all players. The afternoon saw a fight back by Liam, his 72 was 2 shots better than Kieran's 74, Jason Palmer, off to a slow start in the morning recorded the other 71 in the afternoon. Kieran finished on 145, Liam 2nd on 146, Paul Frith 3rd on 147. Pictured County President John E. Ward, Rothley Park, presents the Millennium Trophy to Kieran Thomas, Hinckley. Our players fought tremendously hard, especially David Gibson - the only player to win all six from six. We went into the final day only needing to tie with Durham to take the title but only managed one win in the foursomes which left us with some work to do during the afternoons play, needing two and a half points from the six singles matches. Gibson's win, Wolstenholme and Thomason's halves and two losses meant that it all came down to the final hole of Steve Sansome's game to win the title, but a par from the Durham player clinched the match for them, and the chance of L&RGU claiming the title slipped away. The Finals of The County Mixed Foursomes were held on Sunday 19th September at Lutterworth Golf Club. Cosby had fought through the season to reach their third foursomes final of the year, they faced Oadby Golf Club, who were competing in only the 2nd County final in their history and hoping to emulate the feat of 1998 when they won this same event. Cosby, represented by David Gibson and Rebecca Rowlands were giving 9 shots in the first match to Oadby's Lee Tebbutt and Rose Jacobs. At lunch Oadby were 4 up in this match. In the second match Cosby were again giving 9 shots, Liam Plant and Gemma Parks against Dave Goodman and Linda Smith, this match turning at lunch with Cosby 4 up. The afternoon session saw things change, Gibson and Rowlands powering through to finish overall 1 up and Plant and Parkes ending 3 up, for an overall triumph of 4 up.

The County Men's Foursomes final was held on Sunday 12th September at Glen Gorse Golf Club between Cosby Golf Club and Whetstone Golf Club. Cosby were the eventual winners by 11 Up, however this was a memorable day for Whetstone, this being the first County final in which they had ever featured, the players performed exceptionally well against a vastly experienced Cosby team. The County Pro Am Foursomes final was also held on Sunday 12th September at Glen Gorse Golf Club between Cosby Golf Club B team and Hinckley Golf Club B team. John Cheatle Invitation Foursomes took place at Rothley Park G.C. on Sunday 22nd August. The event is by invitation only from the current President of the Union, here President John Ward, also from Rothley Park, presents the trophies to Winners J. Corcoran and R. Wells from Beedles Lake Golf Club after their superb round of 69 - 2.5 = 66.5, this being one of the lowest scores for many years. The gross prize went to County regulars Matt Stephens and Jason Palmer of Kirby Muxloe with their score of 71. For abridged summary of scores please click here.
The County Union staged its annual event for the Leicester Mercury Cup and for the Scratch Trophy, once again incorporating the Times Corporate Golf Challenge. The event was held at Willesley Park Golf Club on Thursday 19th August. The competition is the oldest event in the Union's calendar and the handicap section dates back to 1923. Leicester Mercury have kindly sponsored the event from the beginning and in 1955, to encourage the lower handicappers in the County to enter, the Scratch Trophy was added. For once this year the weather remained fine, however a very strong wind made life very difficult for the players and only 10 remained within the "buffer" zone, the CSS soaring by 3 to 73. Paul Dixon from the home club, a plus 1 handicap player, took an early lead with a magnificent gross 69, 1 under par, his nett 70 also leading the handicap section for some time. Paul's round had included a birdie at the par 5 downwind 3rd hole and a bogie at the 6th, a tricky par 3 up the hill and across the wind. Birdies at the 10th, 13th, and a bogie at the 16th saw him home in 69.
David Bywater, Birstall, took the 2nd best gross prize with his 75, on Local Rule, the 9 and below handicap nett prize went to Kenny Preston also from Birstall, 79 - 9 = 70, and the 10 - 18 handicap nett prize to Steve Harlow, Lingdale, with his 80 - 10 = 70 score. Pictured are Bill Anderson, Leicester Mercury Sports writer, presenting the Sports Mercury Cup to winner Stuart Marriott, also President of the Union John Ward Rothley Park. For full details please click here. Andy Harding, of the Leicester Mercury, who is also a member at Longcliffe, Stuart Marriott, Paul Dixon and Colin Chamberlain will go through to the next round of the Times Corporate Golf Challenge, this year to be held at Breadsall Priory G.C. on Wednesday 22nd September, and hopefully then on to Forest of Arden hoping for wins which might take them to the finals in La Manga later in the year.
The County Open Championship took place on Sunday 15th August at Cosby Golf Club, and was most generously sponsored by Mark Insulations Ltd. The event featured 24 professionals and 24 amateurs competing for the Championship Salver, the leading professionals also compete for the Frank Weston Cup and in addition the Society of Leicestershire and Rutland Golf Captains kindly donate a replica salver for the leading amateur. Cosby Golf Club was in magnificent condition and the players encountered the fastest greens of the year, measuring over 12 on the stint meter. The morning round saw home club amateur Liam Plant round in a magnificent 3 under par 68, 2 ahead of his nearest rivals Ian Bailey professional from Western Park and the in form County junior Adam Dalby also from Cosby, the fast greens proving a real test to all the players, a tribute to the greenstaff after the horrendous weather earlier in the week. The afternoon proved equally tricky with the weather breaking and heavy rain became the main obstacle for the players, some of the fire had been taken from the greens but with contrasting effect for some. Early leaders failed to maintain their form in the afternoon and Ian Lyner, professional from Glen Gorse, featured early with a 70, Guy Shaw, holder and professional at Charnwood Golf Centre, also returned a 70, David Mee, professional at Longcliffe, returned a 71, but the lead was dramatically snatched from them all with last man out Amateur Steve Sansome of Birstall, returning a second round 69 to add to his morning round of 73 to take the overall Championship on 142.
The 3 Professionals, Ian, Ian and David, having tied on 143 for the Leading Professional's prize, each will hold the Trophy for 4 months. For full result please click here
The County Boys Matchplay Championship, sponsored by Graham Webb of Kirby Muxloe, took place at Glen Gorse Golf Club on Thursday and Friday 12th/13th August. The event was disrupted several times by heavy rain with thunder and lightning causing the boys to leave the course. The 2nd round matches had to be completed on Friday morning, prior to the Semi Finals starting, with further heavy rain making play difficult for the boys. The
winner, Adam Dalby from Cosby beat Scott Wormleighton in
the final by 2/1, both players played very well in the
trying conditions, both were out in 37, Scott opening
with a birdie at the par 5 first, only to drop a shot at
the next, Adam proceeded to do the same at 3rd before he
birdied the 4th. Bogies were shared at the 6th and 7th
holes to turn all square. Adam applied the pressure at
the 11th with a birdie 2, Scott replied at the 12th in
birdie 4, 14 and 15 both changed hands before Adam
pitched dead at the 16th with Scott in the trees. By now
the rain was teeming down making life very difficult and Pictured receiving his Trophy from the County President John Ward, is Adam, on the left is Avraj Ghaly, Longcliffe 4th place, next to John Ward Scott Wormleighton Beedles Lake, Runner up and on the right Sam Mayfield Kilworth Springs 3rd place winner. The trophy was originally donated by Mr. & Mrs. D. Daniels, respectively Past Presidents of the mens and ladies county union. For full result click here.
The County Junior Strokeplay Championship took place at Glen Gorse Golf Club on Wednesday 11th August on a day punctuated by thunder and lightning. The event was reduced to 18 holes after the boys were evacuated from the course for more than 2 hours, leaving insufficient time to start the afternoon round.
Perry Lavin, from Glen Gorse, won the title after a sudden death playoff with James Grant of Rutland County, both players had closed their morning rounds in 1 under par 71s, both dropping a shot at the difficult long par 4 last hole. Sam Mayfield Kilworth Springs was third on 73.
Pictured at Glen are County President John Ward, Champion Perry Lavin and Sponsor Graham Webb. Graham is a high ranking EGU referee, having officiated at numerous events, including the English Amateur Championship, he will be on duty when the County Team travel to Worksop in September for the English County Finals, against Devon, Durham and Surrey. The Leicestershire Fox, a County Union event and also a Midland Order of Merit competition, took place on Sunday 8th August at its tradition home of Willesley Park. On a day when forecasters had predicted thunder and lightning, the Committee were anxious to avoid the weather problems of last year. The day started hot and blustery, making some holes across the wind rather difficult, scores were tight in the morning round but with the wind decreasing slightly and clouds gathering in the afternoon scores improved, resulting in a fine win for Paul Griffiths of Sandwell Park. Paul is also the current leader of the Midland Order of Merit. Paul's first round 69 was the only sub par score of the morning, Jamie Farnsworth, Coxmoor, was hard on his heals with a 70. Paul played exceptionally well in the afternoon to record a magnificent 66 to close with final total of 135, 5 shots ahead of Jamie who repeated his morning score of 70, ending on 140.
Congratulations must also go to Jason for his fine performance in the English Amateur Championship at Holinwell last week where he reached the Quarter Finals, Gary Wolstenholme, not playing in the Fox, narrowly failed to win at Hollinwell, he reached the Semi Finals, both players losing out to the eventual winner James Heath from Surrey.

Eddie has been suffering with a terrible back injury for the last 2 years and despite having only managed a handful of games since his operation, played wonderfully well on his home course to record a fine win. Eddie is able to swing the club but has difficulty in walking the course, he finished in considerable pain, birdieing the last hole, a par 3, to finish in a remarkable 70 shots, he was determined to shoot his age! Starting with a bogey 5 at the first, he quickly levelled with a birdie at the 2nd, then bogied the 4th, followed by birdie at 5 and a bogey at 7 to turn in 36. His home run resulted in a birdie at 15, getting up and down at 17 for a difficult par 5, before holing for his birdie 2 at the 18th to finish 1 under par, gross 70. (net 68) The CSS of 71 was an increase of 1 from the SSS of 70. In Second place, Peter Pendlebury, also from Kirby Muxloe, had a fine round of 72, (playing off 5, net 67), with birdies at the 9th and 18th and only dropping shots at 3rd, 13th and 16th holes. Clive Patrick, Lingdale, finished 3rd with a Gross score of 74, (off 8 H/C net 66). The Team prize went to the home club Kirby Muxloe, Hammond 70, Pendlebury 72 and Bill Dixon the third member with 86, total 228. County Officers and Players travelled to Lutterworth Golf Club to enjoy a splendid evening of golf as part of the Lutterworth Golf Club's Centenary Celebrations. Tim Fisher, the Centenary Captain lead his team to a commanding victory over the County Officials, local knowledge and skilful play ensured the County representative side were solidly beaten 1/2 to 4 1/2. Lutterworth proved to be splendid and generous hosts, entertaining the officials to dinner after the match. After the meal Tim Fisher welcomed the County President and players with a brief summary of the Club's 100 years history, explaining how the club was formed as a 9 hole course back in 1904, on land known as Big Misterton. Lutterworth Golf Club in 1910, together with 11 other clubs, became founder members of the Leicestershire and Rutland Golf Union. In 1915 the club moved to it's current site, again as a 9 hole course and play was only possible during the winter period, as no machinery was available to mow the long grass during the summer months. 1922 saw the construction of the first clubhouse, at a cost of £90. 1957 success arrived, Lutterworth won their first County Men's Foursomes, and in 1971 achieved a unique feat when they won the Mixed, Men's and Pro Am, all in the same year. The course was extended in 1979 to 15 holes and finally to 18 holes in 1987, although some changes have taken place since the bi-pass was formed, and in 1997 the splendid new clubhouse was opened. County President John Ward responded and congratulated Lutterworth on their achievement, he paid tribute to the condition of the course and thanked Captain Tim and President David Low for the club's splendid hospitality. 3rd/4th July - Philip R Wykes Bowl:- Steve Sansome is the County 2004 Match Play Champion, played for the "Philip R. Wykes Bowl", the event this year was held at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club. Steve becomes a 4th time winner of the event, equalled by Gary Wolstenholme and now only 1 behind Gary's father Guy and Roger Christian, both of whom have won on 5 occasions. In a thrilling
final against his friend and county team mate Liam Plant, Cosby,
Steve was never behind, he played steady, or sub par golf
throughout, never dropping a shot and picked up 4 birdies to
pressure Liam right from the start of the final. Liam in fact
probably had the worst possible start losing a ball at the first
and had to concede to Steve's birdie 3, Steve then won 4, lost 5
to a Birdie 3 from Liam, won 8 with a birdie, both birdied 9,
Steve then won 10 in birdie until Liam pulled one back at the
15th in birdie, however the end came immediately after at the
16th, Steve winning from out of the bunker in par to run out a
3/2 Champion. The Semi Finals had proven to be keenly fought, Liam had a tough battle with Past County Captain Paul Frith of Birstall, winning by just 1 hole, Steve's match against Paul Dixon, Willesley Park, ended again at the 16th with Steve defeating Paul by 3/2, both had played well with holes frequently changing hands. The Gardiner Cup
- a Trophy presented to the County Union
to be played for by Club Secretaries and Handicap Secretaries, was
this year held at Beedles Lake Golf Club and was won by John
Noble The win should prove to be a memorable one for John, he was competing in the annual event for the first time and in addition to his personal celebration, he takes the trophy back to his club for display and his success will be much enjoyed by the club, who are currently celebrating their Centenary year! Congratulations to John and to Kibworth Golf Club. Also celebrating their Centenary this year are Lutterworth Golf Club, The County Union looks forward to a representative match against each club later next month. County Team Triumph at Woodhall Spa.
The team selected travelled to Woodhall Spa on Saturday 19th June and on a dull rainy day triumphed again in the Midland Golf Union Regional Qualifier for the EGU finals at Worksop. The team put in a solid all-round performance, with Steve Sansome who was feeling unwell, on a day which was punctuated with heavy thundery showers in the morning and then almost continuous showers and drizzle in the afternoon.
After the morning round the team lay in
2nd place, trailing Lincolnshire by 6 shots with Worcestershire and
Warwickshire close behind. Morning par rounds of 73 by Neil Chaudhuri
and Charlie Ford had opened the scoring on a day that was to be a
memorable one for a long time to come. The afternoon saw Charlie
repeat his morning score of 73 before the news arrived that Philip
Thomason, on only his third visit to Woodhall, was going along in
superb style. Philip had turned after 9 holes in 4 under par, with birdies at 2nd, 3rd, and an Eagle at the long 6th. He continued to impress with another birdie at the 10th, dropped a shot at 13 after driving into a bunker on the left hand side of the fairway, before taking up the birdie trail again at 14, 15 and, by this time with a growing gallery, rolled in a 18 footer for birdie at the 18th to finish in 7 under par 66 and with a new Course Record, the previous record 67 belonging to James Crampton of Lincolnshire. James was following Philip, 8 groups behind, and news reached the spectators of David Gibson's progress, out 1 group ahead of James. It was determined that James would need an albatross up the last if Lincolnshire were to overhaul the County score and to avoid losing on a card play off. It was not to be, he finished with a birdie and the County team secured their win for the second year running, and now travel to Worksop in September to meet the other 3 regional qualifiers, one of which will be Devon the current holders who played in the South West Group last week and to whom the County so narrowly failed to beat on the final day last year at Formby. Players scores were, Neil Chaudhuri 73, 75, Charlie Ford 73, 73, Liam Plant 76, 74, Philip Thomason 79, 66, Steve Sansome 79, 75, David Gibson 74, 77. Total 894. Teams finished as below
Leicestershire and Rutland 894 Lincolnshire 895 Worcestershire 909 Warwickshire 909 Staffordshire 926 Northamptonshire 931 Nottinghamshire 934 Derbyshire 936 Shropshire and Herefordshire 940 Cambridgeshire 952

Congratulations to Jake Amos, Birstall, who flies out with the English U17 team on Thursday to compete in Holland in The Westfries Young Masters. Jake will be making his second appearance for England having competed last year at U16 v Italy when he won both of his matches. Jakes team mates are Stephen Capper from Cheshire and Tom Sherrard from Kent, reserve will be Thomas Haylock from Hertfordshire.
The Amateur Championship took place on Sunday 13th June at The Leicestershire Golf Club. In a really testing and exciting finish Neil Chaudhuri won in nail biting fashion from Gary Wolstenholme Kilworth Springs. Matt Welband Longcliffe, who has just completed his 1st year on a golf scholarship at the University of North Carolina, was in third place. In very hot conditions and with the golf course proving tricky, Chaudhuri playing around his home course held his nerve to finish 2 ahead of Wolstenholme. 4 players had tied for the lead on 70 after Round 1, Chaudhuri, Wolstenholme, Welband and Amos. Gary after a spirited fight back after being out of bounds on the first in the second round, but was never quite able to catch Neil, the luck was not entirely with him. Neil battled on for his second round to finish in 69, one over the par of 68, total 139. The Leicestershire is a course with no par 5s and a par of 68 and SSS of 71, the morning CSS having risen 1 to 72 with the afternoon CSS remaining at 71.

The winner of the event was rising star Oliver Fisher from West Essex Golf Club, beating Steve by 1 shot. Playing together in the last round Steve had birdies at the 10th, 12th, 14th and 16th and thought he might just eclipse Oliver, Steve starting the last round 1 behind, was finally foiled when young Oliver birdied the 18th to retain his 1 shot advantage.
L & R GU boys competed in the EGU Midland Group Boys Team Qualifier on Thursday 3rd June at Redditch Golf Club. After finishing in 2nd place last year, Captain Andy Thorpe and his team had high hopes of improving this year and representing the Midland Group at the National Finals to be held at Broadstone later in the summer. Unfortunately it was not to be, Redditch proved to be a difficult test of golf, the morning CSS went up 2 and the afternoon CSS up 1, with only 3 sub par rounds all day, the morning 68 (6 under CSS) by Rob Harris of Lincolnshire was the highlight of the day, 2 rounds of 71 in the afternoon by R Smith of Notts. and A Sullivan of Warks. were the other sub par scores. The event was eventually won by Shropshire and Herefordshire who now go on to represent the Midlands in the Final, L & R GU finished in 4th place. Individual scores for L & RGU were, (best 5 from 6 to count each round), Arshad Tarmahomed Scraptoft 84, 82, Jake Amos Birstall 75, 82, Perry Lavin Glen Gorse 81, 74, Adam Kemp Longcliffe 76, 77, Matt Stephens Kirby Muxloe 80, 76, Captain Andy Thorpe Rutland County 74, 75, Total 770.
