L&RGU Boys finish 5th in U16 County Cup

Report from Ian Bailey

On 22nd October the County Boys U16s team played in the Midland Golf Union U16 Team Championship where 10 counties compete for the County Shield. This year the tournament was held at The Leicestershire GC and I must say the golf course was in incredible condition for the time of year even though the weather conditions were very challenging.

The competition format was a singles Medal with the 5 best gross scores counting towards the overall team score. Our team finished a very creditable 5th when considering how strong the winning teams were with many England players playing and also how low other teams handicaps were (+2 to 4) when compared to our team who had a handicap range 3 to 7.

As the L&RGU County Coach I’d just like to say how impressed I was watching our Boys play in very demanding and testing weather conditions which needed a ‘Glass Half Full’ positive mind set and approach which I’m pleased to say we’ve worked on and they showed in abundance!

While 5th may not seem that impressive to some we only finished 15 shots behind the winning team score. With strong golf club links that offer a Player Talent ID pathway to County Squads and the ‘Player Centred’ training structure that’s in place I’m confident we can build on this result and push on to win a prestigious title.

We have incredible talent coming through our U14, U16 & U18 Squads and have exciting times ahead but there is always room for new faces.

Well done Boys!
