Seniors win against Warwickshire

L&RGU Seniors v Warwickshire - report from Seniors' Captain Roger Corp

This match was originally scheduled to be played in May but had to be cancelled on the day due to heavy rain and flooded greens etc, which rendered the course unplayable. Although there was heavy rain the night before, the rescheduled match took place in fine weather but only 6 of the original L&RGU team were available, compared to 7 from the Warwickshire side.

Starting at the 10th in the morning Greensomes, our first two pairs of Alan Turton/Phil Adcock and Paul Jelly/Mark Quin-Jarvis got us off to a great start with two fine wins. Our next two pairs of Martin Downing/Naz Kullar and Mark Illsley/Vince Johnson were unable to get on top of their matches and were both defeated. This was in contrast to Roger Corp/Malcolm Northover who won the first five holes to secure a comfortable 5 & 4 win. Martin Hall/John Hardwick secured a closely fought halved match.

Although L&RGU led the morning session 3.5 - 2.5 points, L&RGU also led the morning session in the last two years played and on both occasions lost to Warwickshire. Consequently, there was much to play for in the afternoon four balls to avoid a comeback and a hat-trick of defeats against this opponent who, incidentally, won the MGU 6 Man Team event in August and now represent the Midlands in the national final in October.

We needn’t have worried as our first two pairs of Alan Turton/Phil Adcock and Paul Jelly/Mark Quin-Jarvis continued their morning form and both won 2 & 1. This was followed by Martin Downing/Naz Kullar who were able to turn around their morning defeat and win 1up in a close match. Mark Illsley/Vince Johnson were closely defeated, as were Roger Corp/Malcolm Northover. Martin Hall/John Hardwick however came in with a fine win, which meant L&RGU won the afternoon session 8 - 4 and the match 11.5 - 6.5 points.

Many thanks to Past President, Michael Potter and his wife Ann for turning up to support the team. Thanks also to Ullesthorpe for accommodating us again and finally to Alan Turton for not only providing bananas for the match but also course planners, which proved invaluable.

The win against Warwickshire marked a fine end to a good season, which saw a better prepared squad and good progression from the Seniors who came within a whisker of winning the East Midlands’ Seniors League and suffered only two defeats all season.
